2nd Annual Central Coast Cancer Challenge
When Tyler Borges, age 11 years, runs the 5K at the Central Coast Cancer Challenge on Sunday, August 7 at Laguna Lake Park with his mother, brother and friends, it will be a day of fun, celebration and, in a small way, triumph over his on-going fight against cancer. Team Tyler, along with other teams and hundreds of individuals who participate in the Challenge are raising funds for local cancer support charities: Jack’s Helping Hand and the Cancer WellFit program. Most participants have been touched by cancer; this is their way of honoring a loved one.
Last year, nearly 500 registered athletes, many of them cancer survivors, participated in the 5K, 10K and Children’s 1-Mile runs and 100K and 50K cycling events that raised $12,000, strictly through registration fees. The event hopes to gain participants this year and increase it’s giving.
Registration is open on the Central Coast Cancer Challenge website until 9 p.m. Thursday, August 4 or from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. during the Kick-off Party and Silent Auction on Friday, August 5 at Sunset Honda at 12250 Los Osos Valley Rd, SLO. Athletes and their guest are invited to the party to enjoy free food, a live band and entertainment from Magician Rich Ferguson. Each participant will receive a Technical T-shirt (Kid’s receive a cotton T-shirt), a FREE Hot Dog, Jamba Juice and/or a beer (21 and older only).
Late Registration on the Day-of the event MUST be complete one-hour prior to the event. ONLY cash and check payments will be accepted. A t-shirt is not guaranteed.
Nww events include the 22K Family Fun Ride, a shorter distance on an easier, flat course to ride and “The Gilbert” golf tournament, a shotgun start, 18-holes with proceeds to benefit Jack’s Helping Hand and the Gilbert Family for the on-going treatment that 2 ½ year old Jake Gilbert still receives.
Participants and the general public are invited to a free Wellness Expo featuring local businesses and nonprofits that promote a healthy lifestyle and offer support to the cancer patient. Short seminars include cancer counseling, healthy cooking demonstrations with Chef Nancy Walker of The Wellness Kitchen and adult and children yoga classes with Kiyoko Williams of The Yoga Centre.
The Grande Finale will feature a ceremony honoring cancer survivors and remembering those who lost their battle. Afterward, at noon, enjoy a celebration concert with popular local band, The JD Project. Food vendors will sell everything from Asian infused food to Kettle Corn. A beer and wine garden will be open for adults 21 years and older with I.D.
