It’s debatable whether or not these institutions help our society, but the bigger question is, “If our government can find that much money for business, for prisons, and the military, why isn't there enough to provide services that meet the basic needs of our citizens?” Think Health Care for everyone, Homeless Services, Prenatal Care, Mental Health, Parks and Recreation, Senior Services, Transit Service, improving infrastructure and, for our future leaders, funding for education.

It's a question that should be asked by every citizen. Is this the best way to spend tax dollars? If our government can find the money needed for bailouts of shoddily run businesses, for prisons and the military, but not for the programs that matter to its citizens, then maybe it’s time to change the way our government spends money.

We don’t have to accept declining services and the diversion of our tax dollars. We deserve better. We deserve programs and services that actually serve our needs. Demand it from your representatives. Call your School Board member, Council Member, County Supervisor, your state and national representatives. Tell them that to fund programs that serve life affirming and human needs first.
