West vs. East: Match Made in Hell

Meet Depths of Chaos, your friendly local death metal band. Here's a brief introduction to better acquaint those who don't know us yet.

Ty Richardson plays lead guitar and is a large, if not the largest, force (and guy) in the band. He started this whole mess six years ago with nothing more than the burning desire to perform metal. A union journeyman electrician by trade, he’s played in a variety of rock/metal bands over the last decade and finally discovered the brutalities of extreme metal through our group of friends.

Tom Hoopes is our drummer, and a damn good one at that. He works with computers and currently lives in North County. He moved here from Virginia 3 years ago, and has played in past local bands Arrows of Valli and Vesterian.

Evan Hopper is the newest addition to the lineup, slinging bass guitar and husky vocals. A friend of Tom’s from Virginia, he was convinced to come out to the west coast strictly on music and friends alone. At the time of this writing, he is still in the process of getting settled, but he has already proven his worth on his charm and musicianship alone. A true metal soldier.

Then there’s me, Darien Lohof: Ty’s partner in grime. I play guitar and sing. I have been a student my entire life, studying English. I also work as a pizza delivery guy in Arroyo Grande. I live with Ty in Grover Beach.

Now to tell you what we’re about. We love and are inspired by all sorts of styles of music, yet possess the most enthusiasm for metal. To us, nothing has as much passion, fervor or audacity as it does. When we play, passion is the only word for it. And no, we’re not satanic. We could care less about that. Our name, pondered on for what felt like years, means many things, but mostly it means the idea of being smack dab in the middle of pandemonium, because that is the feeling of change, and try as one might to plan, we usually always have to alter our plans to suit life, not the other way around. To us, our name means existence itself, and we are all within its depths.

Depths of Chaos plays local and far. For a schedule of shows and info in general, visit www.myspace.com/docdeathmetal.

Dressing the Walls at Arts Space Obispo

Los Osos artist, Tera Galanti, thinks globally with the most intimate of items. Her upcoming exhibition in ARTS Space Obispo, titled The Shirt Off Your Back, includes an installation of artwork made from clothing that the artist collected from Hanoi, Bangkok, and Huntington Beach; as well as from local San Luis Obispo County thrift stores. The work will be on display in the SLO Creamery gallery from July 3 – 27, with an opening reception during Art After Dark on Friday, July 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.
According to Galanti, clothing is an element of global exchange as well as an index of its wearer’s experience. She sees this exhibition as serving as a point of intersection between the real and the imaginary. “The fabric artifacts form connections between the viewer and individuals who once inhabited them,” Galanti wrote.
Tera Galanti, whose artwork integrates drawing, painting and contemporary sculptural practices, is currently an Assistant Professor of Foundations in the Art and Design Department at Cal Poly. Her work has been exhibited widely, including at the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center, The Armory Center in Pasadena and The Municipal Art Gallery in Los Angeles. International exhibitions include Ha Noi College of Fine Arts, and the Art Center at Silpakorn University, in Bangkok, Thailand. In addition to her ARTS Space Obispo exhibition, Galanti’s work will be on display at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum from August 1 – October 25.
The Shirt Off Your Back is taking place concurrently with ARTS Obispo’s Wardrobe REVAMP workshops held on 5 consecutive Wednesdays beginning July 8th. The workshops also involve clothing, but in a more functional way. Organizers invite participants to learn to rethink, recycle and recreate clothing, accessories and jewelry in this 3rd annual series of workshops.
ARTS Space Obispo is located at 570 Higuera St., Suite #165 in the SLO Creamery. The exhibit is open to the public, Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 4 PM, and 6 to 9 PM on the first Fridays of each month.
ARTS Obispo, San Luis Obispo County Arts Council, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts advocacy group dedicated to advancing the arts in SLO County through the promotion of arts in education, public access to the arts and artists’ opportunities. This will be the band’s first local appearance in four years. Baker’s Fine Tuned Instruments

Gene Baker and His Fine Tuned b3 InstrumentsGene Baker, locally-located guitar manufacturer and the original proprietor of Baker guitars, is all about the music. With over thirty years of experience building guitars and playing music, he has already definitely dedicated his life to the melodies of the soul, and made a name for himself on both the production and the performance sides of the music business. And he’s not quite finished; Baker is still at it today, carrying on his tradition of quality instruments and good tunes. “I consider them to be tools for tone purists,” he mentions on his website.

Raised in Detroit, Baker started working on guitars when he was in the seventh grade, mostly with bodies, scraping parts off one guitar for another. He moved to the Central Coast area in 1982 during his high school years. A few years after graduating he scored a job at the west coast Gibson custom shop, a one-man operation in Los Angeles. Under that mentor, Roger Giffin, he was able to see what exactly went into building a guitar. “I had been building guitars before then, but I didn’t really have any guided direction. At that time it was also a repair shop, so we worked on almost anyone’s guitar, it could be anything.” If the pace wasn’t enough to keep Baker on his toes, the clientele may have been. Giffin had a reputation good enough to bring big names such as Joe Walsh and Eddie Van Halen knocking for all sorts of pre-tour repair needs. This was the launch pad for Baker’s talent, “I got a lot of my chops figured out, a lot of my repair skills really honed.”

That chapter lasted until 1993 when Gibson decided to shut down the shop and move their operations to Nashville. Fortunately, Baker had a good relationship with Fender, mostly due to working together with them over the years trading parts and whatnot, and was able to become hired within a month. He dubs working at Fender his “acceleration point”, as it was there where he was able to see guitar production from all sorts of angles. Keeping busy didn’t stop Baker from wanting to move back to the Central Coast, however. “The dream was to one day be able to move back home and build guitars so we can live where it was more [about] quality of life instead of city life.”  The transition from Fender to his own business, Baker Guitars, wasn’t entirely easy. Beginning in 1997, although his building knowledge was top notch, the business aspect was very new territory, which ultimately resulted in a bankruptcy in 2003. It was during these years that the Baker name became synonymous with quality craftsmanship and tone. “Baker Guitars was about five or six years of hard knocks learning. But at the same token I think we built around a thousand guitars by the time we closed.”

These days find Baker in his Arroyo Grande wood shop, building guitars under the name of Fine Tuned Instruments, specializing in the “b3” models (stands for built by Baker). The latest company has already made about two hundred guitars since its 2006 inception. A new showroom is planned to be built in the front of the shop; until then the website, FineTunedInstruments.com, is the place to see these stringed beauties. Baker also performs in the Mean Gene Band, a rock group that plays out locally anywhere from Lompoc to Paso Robles. A simple note of caution: as you may very well imagine, this guy shreds.
