Dressing the Walls at Arts Space Obispo
Los Osos artist, Tera Galanti, thinks globally with the most intimate of items. Her upcoming exhibition in ARTS Space Obispo, titled The Shirt Off Your Back, includes an installation of artwork made from clothing that the artist collected from Hanoi, Bangkok, and Huntington Beach; as well as from local San Luis Obispo County thrift stores. The work will be on display in the SLO Creamery gallery from July 3 – 27, with an opening reception during Art After Dark on Friday, July 3 from 6 to 9 p.m. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.
According to Galanti, clothing is an element of global exchange as well as an index of its wearer’s experience. She sees this exhibition as serving as a point of intersection between the real and the imaginary. “The fabric artifacts form connections between the viewer and individuals who once inhabited them,” Galanti wrote.
Tera Galanti, whose artwork integrates drawing, painting and contemporary sculptural practices, is currently an Assistant Professor of Foundations in the Art and Design Department at Cal Poly. Her work has been exhibited widely, including at the Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center, The Armory Center in Pasadena and The Municipal Art Gallery in Los Angeles. International exhibitions include Ha Noi College of Fine Arts, and the Art Center at Silpakorn University, in Bangkok, Thailand. In addition to her ARTS Space Obispo exhibition, Galanti’s work will be on display at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum from August 1 – October 25.
The Shirt Off Your Back is taking place concurrently with ARTS Obispo’s Wardrobe REVAMP workshops held on 5 consecutive Wednesdays beginning July 8th. The workshops also involve clothing, but in a more functional way. Organizers invite participants to learn to rethink, recycle and recreate clothing, accessories and jewelry in this 3rd annual series of workshops.
ARTS Space Obispo is located at 570 Higuera St., Suite #165 in the SLO Creamery. The exhibit is open to the public, Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 4 PM, and 6 to 9 PM on the first Fridays of each month.
